Kate Ramsay joined Turnstone Communications in September 2003. She is administrator of the Wood Awards, an annual event sponsored by all the major wood-related organisations including wood for good, the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, the American Hardwood Export Council, and the Forestry Commission. Kate graduated from Cambridge University with a Natural Sciences degree in 2002 and was keen to gain PR and marketing experience.

“I organise everything to do with the Wood Awards from getting entries in, keeping an eye on the budget and running the awards ceremony itself. I brief designers to produce all the marketing material, organise the judging including the judges' visits to the shortlisted projects, often accompanying them and arrange the Steering Group meetings to ensure the sponsors are happy and are achieving their objectives. On the awards night itself I deal with everything from the catering to the audio visual for the presentation. It is challenging and very satisfying as you go through a whole process to achieve an end result. The highlight for me was visiting projects in Scotland and Wales."

“I am now studying for my Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma at evening classes and getting a much broader picture of how companies go about marketing themselves and their products. I think the timber industry needs to market itself more to the general public. It doesn’t get to the final customer, only really the intermediaries like architects. Promotions are B2B rather than B2C which I think must be the next step."
