Dan Taylor is a Yard Assistant with Snows Timber in Glastonbury, Somerset.

“This is a good job if like me you want to save for the future and work close to home: it takes me around 5-10 minutes to get to work in the morning. I’ve worked for different builders merchants in the past and I’ve got to know the shapes of the different timber mouldings and the sizes available which makes my job easier. “In the mornings I check over my dumper truck for safety and the fork lift too, if I’m likely to need that. Snows have already helped me to get my fork lift licence and this extra skill helps to increase my pay. I check the orders that need to be made up, then I set about collecting all the items needed. When I’ve collected each load I band them together ready for despatch and delivery. There’s a lot of business for the company, but there’s a lot of competition too, so we have to give good service.
“I already know something about the different types of timber but I’d be very willing to learn more. The pay is good for this area, and I can see myself being here for some while to come.”
